Precedents for the World Damba Festival 2012

In the late 1990s, a Damba Festival featuring visitors from Ghana was held in Louisville, Kentucky, the home of Susan Herlin, an American with substantial long-term involvement with the peoples of northern Ghana.  In her identity as Zo-simli-naa (“Friendship Chief”), she will serve on the organizing committee, lending wisdom gained from prior experience.  She will be among the northern chiefs who will preside at the 2012 festival.  In both 2010 and 2011, Natogmah Issahaku and the KSS Foundation produced a World Damba Festival in Amsterdam, which included chiefs and performers from Ghana as well as diasporic Northerners in Europe.  Conversations between Issahaku and Locke regarding the Amsterdam event laid the seed for the 2012 festival.

Working Group
